this is my favorite among D’s Paris photographs.

it was 1989. he had won a grant from Air France to shoot the streets of the beautiful city. it was a coveted gig—even the country’s “foremost” travel photographer wanted dibs on the assignment. that it went to 23-year old D, a photojournalist for the Daily Globe, was almost unacceptable.

so off he went, young and impressionable and full of quiet fire.

he shot this, and the other photographs on that trip, with a Leica M2 and a 35mm lens—both saved up for with help from his mom.

the collection was exhibited as ‘printemps, paris’ in alliance francaise manille, and caltex place, raffles, singapore.

D remains—IMHO—the best street and documentary photographer in the Philippines.
